In Life of Pi, young Pi is stranded on a lifeboat with only a Bengal tiger for company.
Together, they drift across the ocean, with Pi hoping that Richard Parker – the tiger – isn’t one day going to snap and eat him.
24-year-old GuirecSoude is in a kind of similar situation, only he’s sailing the world intentionally (he wasn’t shipwrecked), and instead of a tiger, his animal company is a chicken by the name of Monique.
Guirec explained that he picked Monique up in the Canary Islands, just before he started his journey around the world:
“I knew she was the one straight away.
She was only about four or five months old then, and had never left the Canary Islands. I didn’t speak any Spanish and she didn’t speak any French, but we got along.”
Monique adapted very quickly to life at sea, and even lays eggs, which Guirec eats. When the sea gets rough, she goes in her cage, but otherwise, she’s got free reign of her and Guirec’s boat:
“She follows me everywhere, and doesn’t create any problems. All I need to do is shout ‘Monique!’ and she will come to me, sit on me, give me company. She is amazing.”
So far, Monique and Guirec have been to the Caribbean, and the Arctic. They’re currently in Greenland, and they’re going to Alaska next.
